This means provincial, state and national governments can not do it all. 1) protect your home and industry with fire wise principals (FireSmart in Canada) 2) be prepared to extinguish smouldering or incipient fires 3.5 feet (1 meter) in height or less with shovel, hose or extinguisher (water fire ex. work best) 3) get involved in your rural fire protection if outside a major urban area (volunteers are usually welcome from all walks of life and abilities)

"I thought it worked..." In this video, we see the powerful reflection of someone who dreamt that the fire alarm had gone off and everything was fine. The detector worked, and nothing happened. But then they wake up—only to realize it wasn’t the fire alarm that saved them; it was their alarm clock, and the harsh reality is revealed with a burned face. Did you know that according to OHS Alberta: Short-term (acute) exposure to benzene at high concentrations can cause depression of the central nervous system, causing drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, fatigue, slurred speech, loss of balance and disorientation. These effects are not usual at concentrations below 25 ppm, and are more common at 50 to 150 ppm. As concentrations of benzene vapours in the air increase, the health effects become more severe (vertigo, confusion, loss of consciousness). Exposure to about 20,000 ppm for 5 to 10 minutes can cause death. The most effective ways to reduce exposure are through Substitution -> Engineering controls -> Administrative controls -> PPE. AMGAS HGR & ACT units offer an engineering control which will reduce your benzene exposure and keep your workers safe. Keeping our clients regularly updated on the status of their file is an important part of any investigation IRISS has been engaged to perform. The same goes for updates on our sponsored paddler as he continues his preparation for the Yukon River Quest just 29 days away! In addition to the dozens of hours and hundreds of kilometers Chris has logged to prepare for the Yukon River Quest, he must be familiar with and trust the gear he will rely on during the over 715 km remote wilderness course on the formidable Yukon River. Gear failure or severe weather could mean rescue is hours away. Like with IRISS risk assessments, potential hazards have been reviewed and analyzed so nothing is left to chance, especially with his gear. Chris trains with the same gear he will use during the race so nothing is new or untested. Even how Chris packs his gear to ensure it stays dry and functional is considered. In addition, Chris will wear a fanny pack so he is self sufficient should he get separated from his board. After careful consideration, Chris knows he needs the following on his 14-feet long, 24-inch-wide paddleboard at all times: ·       Quick release tether to board on waist belt to be worn at all times ·       Extra paddle ·       Means to securely fasten all his equipment to board ·       An approved Personal Flotation Device with the attached: ·       Whistle ·       Emergency space blanket bivy sack ·       Firestarter ·       Waterproof matches/lighter ·       A buoyant heaving line of > 15 m (45’) in length and > 6 mm at least (1/4”) in diameter ·       Food and fluids for race plus an additional 24 hours ·       Basic first aid kit ranging from bandages, gauze dressing to anti-chafing cream and anti-diarrhea medicine and more ·       One sleeping rated to -5C and a free-standing tent ·       A watertight flashlight or navigation light for night travel and signaling (required by Transport Canada) with battery power for 8 plus hours ·       Two (2) extra layers of warm clothing contained in a dry bag ·       Backpack stove and fuel with a pot capable of boiling 16 oz. of water ·       A robust zip-seal bag to transport used toilet paper for disposal ·       Rain gear (tops and bottoms) for each team member ·       Tracking and messaging device (SPOT X or InReach) activated for tracking and properly attached to him ·       An insulated container (thermos) with a hot drink or soup ·       Sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent or bug net, knife, money, bear spray Chris will not fall prey to the often used saying about epic excursions “Failing to plan, is planning to fail”. He has evaluated his requirements and will be ready to go on June 26, 2024. IRISS is proud of our support of Chris in the 2024 Yukon River Quest. The fine is not high enough and supervisor and CAO are not in jail, but 🇨🇦 Saskatchewan Power Corporation has been sentenced for three violations of the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996. The charges stemmed from a worksite incident that occurred on Oct. 8, 2020, in Weyburn, Sask. Two workers were fatally injured when they fell to the ground from the bucket of a bucket truck. In May, Saskatchewan Power Corporation was found guilty of violating: clause 12 (a) (being an employer at a place of employment, fail to provide and maintain plant, systems of work and working environments that ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of the employer’s workers, resulting in the deaths of workers); clause 12 (c) (being an employer at a place of employment, fail to provide any information, instruction, training and supervision that is necessary to protect the health and safety of workers at work, resulting in the deaths of workers); and clause 192 (2) (h) (being an employer, require or permit a worker to be raised or lowered by any aerial device or elevating work platform or to work from a device or platform held in an elevated position unless the worker is provided with and is required to use a personal fall arrest system that meets the requirements of Part VII, resulting in the deaths of workers). As a result, the Court imposed a fine of $300,000 with a surcharge of $120,000 on the first count and $150,000 on each of the other two counts with a surcharge of $60,000 on each of those charges, for a total amount of $840,000.

I don't post often, but I figured I'd share my top 10 reasons to start a trade career in Alberta. As someone who's been knee-deep in Alberta's Oil and Gas industry for over three decades, with 27 years as a tradesperson under my belt, and now teaching the next generation at Olds College, I've got a unique perspective on why pursuing a trades career is a smart move, especially for you high school grads out there in 2024. 1. The money's still good, really good. • As of July 2024, full-time workers in Alberta earned a median of $32.16 an hour, the second highest in Canada, just behind BC. 2. Some trades are raking it in. • Take the "Forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, oil and gas" sector. It's seeing median wages of $51.28 an hour, a sweet $1.28 bump from June. 3. Lower Education Costs: • Trade school is significantly less expensive than university education. • This results in lower student debt upon entering the workforce. 4. Shorter Training Period: • Trade programs can be completed in as little as six weeks to two years, compared to four years for a typical university degree. • You can enter the workforce and start earning sooner. 5. Earn While You Learn: • Apprenticeship programs in Alberta follow an 80/20 model: 80% on-the-job paid learning and 20% classroom instruction. • You're earning a salary while gaining your qualifications. 6. High Demand and Job Security: • Alberta is experiencing a significant labor shortage in the trade industry. • The construction industry alone needs to recruit 351,800 new workers by 2033. • Trades registration numbers are up 28% from last year, with about 61,000 apprentices, indicating strong industry growth. 7. Competitive Salaries: • Many trades offer high earning potential. For example, the average starting salary for a qualified electrician in Alberta is around $80,000 annually. 8. Government Support: • Alberta is investing over $117 million in apprenticeship programming for 2024-25. • Over the next three years, an additional $24 million per year is allocated to create 3,200 more seats in apprenticeship classes across the province. • The "Alberta is Calling" program offers a one-time refundable tax credit of $5,000 to eligible skilled tradespeople who relocate to Alberta. 9. Diverse Career Opportunities: • Alberta offers 47 different apprenticeship programs to choose from. • Trades are essential in various industries, including energy, petrochemicals, housing, and agriculture. 10. Youth Programs and Support: • Alberta has introduced Skilled Trades Youth Ambassadors to promote trade careers and provide peer insights. • Specialized programs like the Dual Credit program at Olds College, in partnership with Chinooks Edge School Division, offer clear pathways to trade careers starting in high school. #trades #oldscollege #alberta #welding

📚🔥 Inspiring the Next Generation of First Responders and Safety Professionals! 🔥📚 This week in Guelph, we had an incredible time with the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students, diving into the many career opportunities available in first response and private industry. From trying on chemical protective clothing and firefighter bunker gear to shooting off fire extinguishers, learning about fire blankets, and discussing basic spill response techniques, these students gained hands-on experience to prepare them for workplace emergencies. The passion and curiosity they showed while exploring fire safety, hazardous materials response, and workplace emergency planning were inspiring. As these students finish their co-op placements and look ahead to their future careers, the possibilities are endless!
